Established in what used to be the Santiago Fort, the National Historic Museum is one of the most important historic institutions of Brazil. In 1920 it was enlarged and beautified with neocolonial architecture and decoration to take part in the exhibition celebrating “One Hundred Years of Brazil’s Independence.”  Two years later it was complemented with the “Great Industries Pavilion” and two new galleries. Its permanent collections include: “The Cannon Courtyard,” “The Portuguese Around the World,” and “From Mobile to Automobile.”
