The church had an important influence in colonial art and architecture, especially during the Baroque period. In response to the the iconoclastic inclinations of the Protestant Reformation, Roman Catholic churches now provided extravagance and exciting imagery to inspire and overwhelm its followers and catch their attention. With the discovery of vast supplies of gold in Brazil, this extravagance was pushed even further in Brazilian Baroque.
